Environmental Innovation​

There were two entries in the Environmental Innovation category. Boral entered work at their Derwent Park Concrete Plant to reduce water wastage and Hanson entered work to reconfigure operations at their Moonah Concrete Plant to reduce congestion and fuel wastage while trucks were ramped.

Both entries were commended but no award was presented.

The judges welcomed the positive environmental initiatives from both Boral and Hanson in being innovative in their approach to meeting compliance. However they recognised the high standards set by previous winners in this category and encourage the industry to respond positively to this challenge.

Health and Safety Innovation

Winner - Hazell Bros Group Pty Ltd: Fit for Work, Fit for Life

Hazell Bros Group Pty Ltd developed a program in 2016 in conjunction with the Cancer Council to raise awareness relating to health, fitness and sun exposure among their workforce. The judges were particularly impressed with results of this program. In the first year over 1 000 attended classes, lectures and presentations, which means on average each Hazell Bros employee had attended more than two.

The judges were impressed by the innovative approach to partnering with a respected health and wellbeing body to develop such a compelling program for their employees with measurable uptake and benefits.

Community Leadership Award

Winner - Hazell Bros Group Pty Ltd: 10 Days on the Island – Industry art government partnership

The Hazell Bros Group Pty Ltd collaboration with the State Government and the Ten Days on the Island arts festival organisers is visionary. By a funding partnership to bring an event artist using stone as his medium to Tasmania and launch the Statewide program of events with a blast at a stone quarry has the potential to change the community’s perception of the quarrying industry. Hazell Bros Group benefited from positive exposure but so did the quarrying industry as a whole.

The judges were delighted with the innovative approach taken by the company to profile the industry while also supporting artistic contributions to the state.
