NSW - CCAA Innovation Awards 2018

The 2018 NSW CCAA Innovation Awards were held at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse on Friday 10 August 2018.

A record 330 guests attended this year, the 40th time that awards of this kind have been presented in NSW. The gala event celebrated the achievements of the year, with Mr Scot MacDonald MLC, Parliamentary Secretary for Planning, the Central Coast and the Hunter, presenting awards in the categories of environmental innovation, health and safety innovation and community leadership. 

     


CCAA wishes to acknowledge the high calibre of entries received this year, and congratulates the following winners: 

Community Leadership Award | WINNER: Boral Teven Quarry - Building Social Inclusion with the Community

Boral Teven Quarry has partnered with the Tintenbar Teven Community Aid Network (TinCAN) since 2013. Through the partnership, the quarry has supported TinCAN to fundraise and deliver its stated objectives, including reducing the risk of social isolation for elderly and disadvantaged residents. The bus trip program sims to break the regular routine of TinCAN's clients by offering an opportunity to spend time with others, make new contacts and enjoy the advantages of both socialising and being in an away-from-home environment. The Teven Quarry team has derived great satisfaction from being involved in this locally run initiative and making a difference in their community.

Environmental Innovation Award | WINNER: Cleary Bros Albion Park Quarry - Enhanced Revegetation of Rainforest Communities

Previous revegetation efforts of biodiversity offset areas at the Albion Park Quarry experienced numerous setbacks over the past ten years. To overcome this, Cleary Bros overhauled their revegetation program in early 2017 and introduced a range of strategies which has led to minimal seedling loss and excellent growth. Strategies included importing additional fertile basaltic topsoil, application of a dense mulch bed, more targeted seedling selection, installation of watering tubes along seedlings, and installation of electric fencing. Seedling growth to date has been exceptional, with growth rates generally consistent with what would be expected in an excellent growing season, despite an extended dry season.

Health & Safety Innovation Award | WINNER: Boral Tippers North - Rock Removal from Dual Tyre Kit

Rocks that have become lodged in dual tyres are a risk to both workers on site but also to the wider community on public roads. Boral's Tippers North facility has successfully trialled and implemented a method which uses a strap placed around the rock and then wrapped around the tyre which enables a driver to be able to safely remove the rock by driving forward/backwards and keeping them out of the line of fire. Boral has now introduced training for the method, and a rock removal pack with instruction was put together and placed in the toolbox of the trucks.
