TAS - CCAA Innovation Awards 2018

The CCAA Innovation Awards & Dinner were held on Friday 18 May 2018.

Around 70 members, government representatives, sponsors and guests enjoyed a relaxed evening with fine Tasmanian cuisine an wine in the beautifully appointed Jones & Co Room at the Henry Jones Art Hotel on the Hobart waterfront.

A highlight of the evening's program were the CCAA Tasmanian Innovation Awards conferred by the Minister for Resources and Minister for Building and Construction, The Hon. Guy Barnett MP.

The innovation awards are separated into three categories:

Environmental Innovation This award is for outstanding achievement in developing and successfully applying a new initiative or an original solution in one or more aspects of environmental management at a concrete, extractive or cement operation;

Health & Safety Innovation This award recognises outstanding achievement in developing and implementing an innovative solution to an identified health and safety issue. Entries for this award may include a product solution, engineering innovation, a training program, an awareness raising activity or other risk control measures that reduce the risk of work-related injury and illness; and

Community Leadership This award recognises an exceptional contribution a CCAA member has made in enhancing the public perception and standing of the heavy construction materials industry. For example, projects for this award category may include company initiatives and measures that better inform and educate the community; support local schools, community groups and sporting clubs; or improves site amenity for the local neighbourhood.

CCAA wishes to congratulate all of the 2018 finalists on their efforts and contribution to improvement and innovation this year.
CCAA congratulates the following entries on winning their categories:

Environmental Innovation Award | WINNER: Boral Australia - Advanced Water Management

In constructing the new Launceston Concrete Plant, Boral wanted to use as much recycled water as possible and reduce the amount of stormwater runoff. The advanced water management system used large diameter pipes connected with pits to form a secure an inexpensive underground storage capacity. All process water and the majority of rainfall runoff is directed to storage and then reused onsite for process and wash down requirements.

Health & Safety Innovation Award | WINNER: Hazell Bros. Group Pty Ltd - Concrete Placement Conveyor

Hazell Bros. won a project to pour closely adjacent concrete slabs, using a mix design too stiff for pumping. Normal delivery methods can deliver the concrete within an arc but final placement would have required manual handling, which carries a significant risk of strain injuries. A new type of concrete placement conveyor was designed and manufactured, which could be attached to a tele-handler and move forwards and backwards and laterally to deliver stiff concrete to any point in the form.

Community Leadership | WINNER: Cement Australia - Classroom in a Cement Plant

Cement Australia, Railton Plant is located close to the Railton township and continually works on building a strong relationship with the Railton community. Security at the plant prevents the public from visiting and seeing the plant in operation. Cement Australia hosted an excursion by a group of children from Railton Primary School, where they learned about the innovative science used in the cement manufacture processes. The children took home a better understanding of the cement plant operations and perhaps a desire to consider science or engineering as a future career.
