SA - CCAA Innovations Awards 2019


The CCAA Innovation Awards Dinner for South Australia was held on Thursday 25 August 2019.

More than 150 members, government representatives, sponsors and guests enjoyed the rarefied atmosphere of the Panorama Ballrooms of the Adelaide Convention Centre to celebrate innovation in the industry.

There many highlights of the evening's program including a presentation by the Minister for Energy & Mining and Member for Stuart, Dan van Holst Pellekaan MP.

The Innovation Awards are separated into four categories:

  • Environmental Innovation - This awards is for outstanding achievement in developing and successfully applying a new initiative or an original solution in one or more aspects of environment management at a concrete, extractive or cement operation.
  • Health & Safety Innovation - This awards recognises outstanding achievement in developing and implementing an innovative solution to an identified health and safety issue. Entries for this award may include a product solution, engineering innovation, a training program, an awareness raising activity or other risk control measures that reduce the risk of work-related injury and illness. 
  • Community Engagement - This award recognises an exceptional contribution a CCAA member has made in enhancing the public perception and standing of the heavy construction materials industry. For example, projects for this award category may include company initiatives and measures that better inform and educate the community; support local schools, community groups and sporting clubs; or improves site amenity for the local neighbourhood. And
  • Diversity & Inclusion - This award recognises an outstanding contribution that a CCAA member has made in improving the level of Diversity & Inclusion in their workplace or the industry more generally. Projects for this award in this category may include initiatives that establish a working environment that supports an increase in the level of diversity in the workplace or initiatives that facilitate and encourage a greater level of inclusiveness of a workplace.

Environmental Innovation Award | JOINT WINNER: SA Premium Cement & Concrete - Mile End Wet Batch Plant Concrete

SA Premium Cement & Concrete (SAPCC) established a new innovative Wet Batch Concrete Plant in Mile End, strategically positioned to service the key CBD market and the inner western and southern suburbs. Mile End's eclectic mix of highly clean commercial businesses, including Haigh's Chocolates, Dairy Farmers, Safcol and Villis Bakery, meant it was critical that they carefully considered this environment to ensure that their footprint and operations had no detrimental community or environmental impact. Whilst the wet batch plant comes with a much higher capital cost, the environmental benefits from this and other initiatives on site, reduce or eliminate - dust; water use; noise; fuel consumption; cement usage; truck movements and spillage.

Environmental Innovation Award | JOINT WINNER: Adelaide Brighton - Adelaide Brighton Cement Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) Project

Adelaide Brighton Cement (ABC) is the first company in Australia to take on the burning of refuse derived fuels (RDF). ABC re-engineered their Birkenhead Plant's kiln firing system to allow for the burning of RDF and in turn reduced total reliance on traditional fossil fuels, in this case, natural gas. ABC worked with a supplier to further develop their resource recovery and segregation operations into a more sophisticated recovery plant. This was done to ensure very high levels of product quality control, refuse material supply, and stringent specifications in order to produce a fuel suitable for the use in the cement plant.



Health & Safety Innovation Award | WINNER: Boral Australia - Boral and the Konnect SEGNUT

There have been several serious lost-time injuries while carrying out the task of changing out cutting edges on front-end loader buckets. The SEGNUT provide an innovative solution to remove the necessity for the use of high-risk nut removal equipment and techniques, such as hydraulic nut splitter or oxy cutting. 

Health & Safety Innovation Award | HIGHLY COMMENDED: Adelaide Brighton - Step Up & Stomp Out the Stigma of Mental Illness

This program has been incredibly successful with many employees wearing the safety boot-laces monogrammed with 'Step Up and Stomp Out the Stigma of Mental Illness' and asking for replacement laces when the initial pair supplied were worn out. Some employees who do not wear safety boots (e.g. office-based employees) have shown real initiative and chosen to wear the boot laces in their hair as a replacement for everyday hair ties and ribbons to promote the concept. It is estimated that these laces have generated over 2,000 conversations already. 

Diversity & Inclusion Award | WINNER: Adelaide Brighton - Adelaide Brighton and the University of Adelaide Female Chemical Engineering Scholarships

In 2018, Adelaide Brighton Cement (ABC) partnered with the University of Adelaide to provide annual scholarships to three female engineering students from the University. ABC believe that the female chemical engineering scholarships are a positive avenue to address the issue of gender imbalance in the industry and the ratio of female engineers in the workforce at ABC.
