VIC - CCAA Innovation Awards 2019

The latest innovations across the cement, concrete and aggregate industries were showcased at the Victorian CCAA Innovation Awards Dinner on Thursday 22 August.

Parliamentary Secretary for Public Transport  Infrastructure, Vicki Ward presented the awards which recognise innovation in environmental management, health and safety performance, exceptional community engagement and for the first time ever; Diversity and Inclusion.

Environmental Innovation | WINNER: Holcim (Australia) Pty Ltd - Corangamite Water Skink Monitoring and Habitat Creation Program

Additional Habitat for endangered Corangamite Water Skink was developed during the expansion of the Colac quarry 10 years ago. Since then the number of Skinks has significantly increased.

Health & Safety Innovation | WINNER: Cement Australia Pty Ltd - Superblender Trolley - Elimination of Confined Space Entry

A new innovative hydraulic trolley, capable of lifting heavy parts out of the Geocycle Superblender (blends fuels for kilns) was developed to eliminate the need to enter the high risk confined space.

HIGHLY-COMMENDED: Independent Cement & Lime Pty Ltd - Installation of Auto Hatch for Bulk Tankers
To reduce the risk of fall from heights whilst loading cement tankers, the Melbourne Cement Facility mandated that all tankers accessing the site must be equipped with auto hatches in order to receive a load.


Community Engagement | WINNER: Holcim (Australia) Pty Ltd - Bunyip Forest Fire

Following the March 2019 Bunyip Fire, the Tyong North Quarry team's proactive engagement with emergency services, neighbours and local farmers to assist in the rescue and relocation of animals, as well as providing resources to assist in fire fighting, raised the profile of our industry within the community.

Community Engagement | HIGHLY-COMMENDED: Hanson Australia Pty Ltd - Community Led Engagement

A Pop Up Display unit was used to inform and engage the local community, increase Community Contact Database registrations and increase awareness of local quarrying operations. 




Community Engagement | HIGHLY-COMMENDED: Holcim (Australia) Pty Ltd - Werribee River Clean Up 
Each year the Werribee Quarry team joins with the Werribee River Association community group and participates in a river clean up. Tonnes of waste have been removed from the river, improving the amenity and habitat for local species.



Diversity & Inclusion | WINNER: Hanson Australia Pty Ltd  - Woman Driving Transport Careers

This program aims to increase female truck drivers by offering women with a motor car license a free, four-week intensive driver training program followed by full-time employment as trainee agitator and tipper drivers.
