ENVIRONMENTAL INNOVATION AWARD | WINNER: BORAL AUSTRALIA - STOCKTON QUARRY - QUARRY FOREDUNE REHABILITATION

Boral's Stockton Sand Quarry have developed an innovative and planned approach to the challenge of rehabilitation and re-vegetating a migrating coastal sand dune using a variety of site sourced plants, raised and propagated in the onsite nursery, before being planted into the dressed and stabilised dune. This approach to dune rehabilitation and re-vegetation was developed after years of trial and error along with a review of other approaches used in coastal environments by Councils, coast care groups and private enterprises.

ENVIRONMENTAL INNOVATION AWARD | HIGHLY COMMENDED: CLEARY BROS - GERROA SAND QUARRY - INSTALLATION OF GREENHOUSE

Cleary Bros Gerroa Sand Quarry have successfully undertaken one of the largest revegetation projects in the Illawarra quarrying region by replanting 24 hectares of Swamp Sclerophyll and Swamp Oak Forest. This project was carried out following the purchase and installation of a greenhouse to grow new plants from seeds collected on site and to nurture tubestock suitable to enhance the Gerroa Sand Quarry Conservation Areas.

HEALTH & SAFETY INNOVATION AWARD | WINNER: HOLCIM (AUSTRALIA) PTY LTD - SYDNEY CONCRETE - RAW MATERIALS LOADING SOCK DESIGN CHANGE

Holcim’s Sydney Concrete experienced large amounts of downtime due to torn raw material loading socks which require a fitter to attend site and replace. Replacing the sock is difficult and requires working at height in dirty conditions in an awkward position. The design change was to have the sock mounted onto a template which could just be clipped on a winch system that would not require anyone working from heights.

HEALTH & SAFETY INNOVATION AWARD | HIGHLY COMMENDED: BORAL AUSTRALIA - TIPPERS NORTH - AIR OPERATED TAILGATE PROP

Certain products have a tendency to stick to the tailgate and body of tipper trucks, resulting in a need for the driver to clean the tailgate area to enable the tailgate to correctly close and secure. Due to safety concerns raised by drivers, regulators and previous incidents relating to this process, Boral Logistics have installed an air operated tailgate prop on their tipper trucks as an engineering safety control.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AWARD | HIGHLY COMMENDED: BORAL AUSTRALIA - JOHNS RIVER QUARRY - QUARRY INFRASTRUCTURE FOR EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT

Johns River Quarry is situated in a small community of 300 people on the NSW Mid North Coast. In 2017 a new basin was built on-site, and staff noticed a significant discharge of useable water. In 2018/19 the team at Johns River Quarry commissioned a project for a dedicated high-flow suction line, for use by the NSW RFS during times of bushfire.

Access to the water management infrastructure was vindicated when it was used to help battle significant blazes impacting the village at the end of 2019.

DIVERSITY & INCLUSION AWARD | WINNER: HANSON AUSTRALIA PTY LTD - SYDNEY REGION - INDIGENOUS EMPLOYMENT
