Queensland 2021 Innovation Award Winners Announced
The 2021 CCAA Innovation Awards were conferred on 10 September at the W Hotel Brisbane by the Hon. Mick de Brenni MP, Minister for Energy, Renewables and Hydrogen and Minister for Public Works and Procurement.
Around 230 guests attended the event to celebrate outstanding achievements across the heavy construction materials industry in environmental innovation, health and safety innovation, community engagement, and diversity & inclusion.
Over 2020 and 2021, a strong number of 30 entries were submitted across the four award categories.

ENVIRONMENTAL INNOVATION AWARD | WINNER: BORAL AUSTRALIA - CONCRETE QUEENSLAND - ELECTRONIC SILO OVER-PRESSURE DETECTION & PREVENTION
An innovative application of traditional technology has allowed the Boral team to develop a simple, and practical system to prevent over-pressurisation of powder silos during the pneumatic transfer of powder from the tanker into the silo. This new system provides an additional control through a pressure sensor installed in the silo roof which sends an audible and visual alarm to warn the operator that allowed pressure is being exceeded. The new system reduces the risk of an uncontrolled discharge, minimises the possibility of human error, as well as providing a cost-effective solution of approximately $2,500 per silo.

ENVIRONMENTAL INNOVATION AWARD | HIGHLY COMMENDED: HOLCIM (AUSTRALIA) PTY LTD - MACKAY CONCRETE PLANT - ENVIRO CHUTE WASH
The Holcim Mackay team have installed a wash off and containment facility which allows drivers to rinse off their chutes on sites that do not offer suitable wash-out facilities. This practical but simple system allows for the retention of wash water onboard and reduces the risk of spillage and contamination on site. Drivers can scrape down their chutes onto a tray and into the tank, therefore reducing time on-site. The system contains about 40 litres of waste water which is, on return to the plant, discharged into the water recycling system and any aggregates are restored to the hard waste bin resulting in all materials being dealt with in a controlled environment.

HEALTH & SAFETY INNOVATION AWARD | WINNER: HANSON AUSTRALIA PTY LTD - WEST END CONCRETE PLANT - TRUCK POSITIONING SYSTEM
An inventive Truck Positioning System at the inner- city Hanson West End concrete plant has resulted in not only improved load times, but a significant reduction in site hazards as drivers no longer have to access and egress from their cabs to adjust their location. The ‘automatic car wash’ style system includes high gain optical sensors which detect the truck funnel and allow drivers to position the vehicle accurately under the chute. The system also includes no moving parts and minimal ongoing maintenance requirements, with the potential to be scaled up or down to suit the requirements of a site.

HEALTH & SAFETY INNOVATION AWARD | HIGHLY COMMENDED: HY-TEC INDUSTRIES PTY LTD - NARANGBA LABORATORY - CONCRETE TRIALS EQUIPMENT
To improve safety outcomes, an innovative concrete trial simulation system was developed and installed at the Hy-tec Narangba laboratory. The system has resulted in improved repeatability and accuracy of trial mixes, as well as a reduction in manual handling and spillage hazards including slips, trips and falls hazards. Being able to close the mixer door during the loading process reduces dust generation and noise impacts, while E-stop protection systems allow full isolation during maintenance procedures.
HEALTH & SAFETY INNOVATION AWARD | HIGHLY COMMENDED: BORAL AUSTRALIA - LOGISTICS QLD - NATIONAL HEAVY VEHICLE ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION & STANDARDISATION
After a review of 6 years of vehicle accident history, the Boral Logistic QLD team developed a system to improve the quality and consistency of heavy vehicle accident investigations. The Crash Investigation Program includes a standard crash investigation process, identifying first responders, and investigation kit development. Supporting the initiative was a comprehensive training program developed in conjunction with industry experts including crash scene management, data collection and photography techniques.

DIVERSITY & INCLUSION AWARD | HIGHLY COMMENDED: HANSON AUSTRALIA PTY LTD - SKYGATE - WORKING REMOTELY
To assist in the changes facing businesses and workers during COVID19, Hanson has developed a program – the Working Remotely Packet – which gave a roadmap to managers and employees in navigating the potential issues arising from remote work and new flexible working arrangements. To measure the success of the program, a Well Being Survey was conducted to ensure that those working remotely felt supported and communicated to on a regular basis.
