South Australia 2021 Innovation Award Winners Announced

The 2021 CCAA Innovation Awards were conferred on 1 October at the Hilton Adelaide, attended by dignitaries the Hon. Tom Koutsantonis MP, Shadow Minister for Energy and Mining and Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Transport and Paul Heithersay, Chief Executive of the Department for Energy and Mining.

Around 150 guests attended the event to celebrate outstanding achievements across the heavy construction materials industry in environmental innovation, health and safety innovation, community engagement, and diversity & inclusion. Over 2020 and 2021, 20 entries were submitted across the four award categories.

ENVIRONMENTAL INNOVATION AWARD | WINNER: SA PREMIUM CEMENT & CONCRETE PTY LTD – MILE END CONCRETE PLANT - CLOSED CIRCUIT WASTE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

SA Premium Cement & Concrete have commissioned a highly innovative closed circuit waste management system that reprocesses all waste streams from the Wet Batch Mile End site into value added products. The system also integrates a global first by installing a robotic bowl cleaner into the process which largely overcomes the primary limitation of wet mix plants - the cleaning and maintenance of the wet-mix bowl.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AWARD | HIGHLY COMMENDED: HALLET CONCRETE – DRY CREEK – SUICIDE PREVENTION AND MENTAL WELL BEING AWARENESS

Hallett Concrete as part of the MSP Group of Companies continue to support Mates in Construction (MIC) to raise much needed funds and awareness about the alarming number of suicides in our Industry. Support to MIC is actively giving through financial sponsorship, including suppliers, contractors, and customers. MIC training is already incorporated into the induction process of all new employees.


COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AWARD | HIGHLY COMMENDED: HANSON AUSTRALIA PTY LTD – KANMANTOO QUARRY – EMBRACING CREATIVE MINDS OF STUDENTS IN POST MINE LIFE PLANNING

As part of their Mining Proposal for the Expansion of the Kanmantoo Quarry, Hanson was required to determine a post mining development/rehabilitation concept for the site. Hanson thought this was a great opportunity to pose this a learning challenge to a local High School, the invitation was accepted by the Murray Bridge High School resulting in excellent contributions and engagement.

HEALTH & SAFETY INNOVATION AWARD | WINNER: ADBRI LTD – SAFETY STEP CHANGE

Adbri’s Safety Step Change program was developed, following the need for immediate intervention to address the high incidence of harm and concurrent risk of serious injury/fatality within our business and our industry, governed by inconsistent or incoherent rules and processes. Since its implementation, Adbri has achieved a 58% reduction in injuries to our people at work, the lowest recorded figure in company history.


HEALTH & SAFETY INNOVATION AWARD | HIGHLY COMMENDED: BORAL AUSTRALIA - LINWOOD QUARRY – EDGE PROTECTION HEIGHT INDICATOR STICKERS

The Boral Linwood Quarry team have implemented an innovative, low cost, highly visible & reflective, safe and effective solution to this common industry problem by designing and implementing height indicator stickers that are accurately applied to the wheel guards of site loaders, allowing the operator to remain in their cabin and accurately construct earthen windrows that are always compliant.

DIVERSITY & INCLUSION AWARD | WINNER: BORAL AUSTRALIA – SOUTHERN REGION BUSINESS UNIT – DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION AT BORAL

Boral’s Southern Region Business Unit has taken it upon themselves to form a grassroots level Diversity & Inclusion Guiding Coalition. This working group is made up of employees from various levels within the business with a particular focus on achieving a diverse cross-section. The initiative is challenging traditional business take-up of Diversity & Inclusion by embedding the understanding and importance throughout the hierarchy of business, to make a difference on the frontline. The group is gender balanced at 50/50, along with a wider range of backgrounds, experience, age and religion.
