CCAA INNOVATION AWARDS 2021 WESTERN AUSTRALIA WINNERS ANNOUNCED

The 2021 CCAA Innovation Awards, Western Australia were conferred on 22 October at the Victory Lounge, Optus Stadium by the Hon. Bill Johnston MP, Minister for Mines and Petroleum.

Around 140 guests attended the event to celebrate outstanding achievements across the heavy construction materials industry in Environmental Innovation, Health & Safety Innovation, Community Engagement, and Diversity & Inclusion. Over 2020 and 2021, a strong number of 29 entries were submitted across the four award categories. CCAA wishes to congratulate all the award entrants on their efforts and contributions to improvement and innovation during these times.

ENVIRONMENTAL INNOVATION AWARD | WINNER: BORAL AUSTRALIA - CANNING VALE - REUSE OF RETURNED CONCRETE

Returned concrete at the Canning Vale Concrete Plant was cast into moulds to produce interlocking concrete blocks that were used to build storage bins, retaining walls and traffic barriers, diverting hundreds of tonnes of material from landfill. 

The judges stated that "this simple, cost-effective solution reduces waste to landfill and preserves in-ground quarry resources. The interlocking Lego block moulds enable a more complete, safe, engineered solution that is readily transferable".

HEALTH & SAFETY INNOVATION AWARD | WINNER: COCKBURN CEMENT - KWINANA - KWINANA MOBILE PLANT ALARM SYSTEM

The Kwinana operations implemented a pedestrian mobile plant safety system that utilises an audible and visual proximity alarm that alerts both the pedestrian and plant operator. 

The judges commented that "this innovation effectively addressed the ever present, ongoing high-risk situations of separating mobile plant and pedestrians. Whilst this innovation has been used in other industries, the judges were encouraged by the introduction of this into our sector".

HEALTH & SAFTEY INNOVATION AWARD | HIGHLY COMMENDED: BORAL AUSTRALIA - AUDITING AND INSPECTION PROCESS DURING COVID-19

Western Region introduced virtual audits and inspections across widely spread sites during the COVID-19 travel restrictions using a GOPRO 360. This was posted to site and returned with the inspection footage for analysis and consultation by a subject matter expert.

The judges were "impressed by how the technology was embraced to deal with the unusual situation imposed by COVID restrictions. It also reduced risks by allowing remote access to confined spaces".

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AWARD | HIGHLY COMMENDED: HOLCIM (AUSTRALIA) PTY LTD - BUNBURY QUARRY - BUSHFIRE ASSISTANCE

Bunbury Quarry has engaged wit the local Gelorup Fire Brigade's fire truck water by allowing access to the existing site standpipe and dam, allowing several fire trucks to fill up simultaneously, providing greater service to the community during emergencies. 

The judges noted that "the entry provided clear evidence of management reaching out to the community and delivering value by connecting the local fire brigade to the site, enabling standard equipment for a secondary use".

DIVERSITY & INCLUSION AWARD | WINNER: HOLCIM (AUSTRALIA) PTY LTD - INDIGENOUS PARTNERSHIP FOR CONCRETE DELIVERY

Holcim entered into a $1.5 Million partnership with Amaroo Mining and Civil, an Indigenous business, in the production and delivery of concrete on the West Angelas Iron Ore project in the Pilbara. 

The judges commented that "there was significant across company effort in partnering with a diverse business so they are sustainable in the longer term, especially important in the regions of WA".
