CCAA EHS Award winners announced at QLD Construction Materials Industry Dinner - 2016

The CCAA EH&S Awards in Queensland were conferred on Friday 5 August Mr Neil Scales, Director-General, Department of Transport and Main Roads, at the Construction Materials Industry Dinner at the Sofitel Brisbane.

In 2016, a record 40 entries were submitted across the three awards, which focus on improving environmental performance, health and safety outcomes, and community leadership.  Since the commencement of the awards in Queensland in 2011, there have been some 170 innovations put forward by member companies to share good practices.

ENVIRONMENTAL INNOVATION AWARD - WINNER

HOLCIM (AUSTRALIA) PTY LTD – QLD AGGREGATE SITES
STATEWIDE INNOVATIONS IN STORMWATER MANAGEMENT AND MONITORING  
For implementation of a comprehensive strategy to better monitor, manage and report on water and stormwater for Holcim quarries throughout Queensland.  A key component of Holcim’s Sustainable Development Ambition 2030 is to have a demonstrative positive impact on water.  To achieve this, Holcim has installed and implemented technological advances across all Queensland quarry sites.  

These technological advances have included installation of water measurement measures with real-time data (3G-telemetry); automatic weather stations, water quality sampling equipment, training and data management innovations, and detailed catchment and hydrology assessments.  These combined methods allow Holcim to be on track to improve water efficiency by 20% by 2020.   

Through implementation of such innovations, significant positive environmental outcomes have also been achieved including:

  • Site specific weather conditions recorded at all sites enabling sites to monitor environmental performance of on-site stormwater systems in relation to rainfall and intensity;
  • Comprehensive understanding of water flow and consumption analysis to enable links between water consumption, recycling/reuse and discharge;
  • Water samples can now be collected at times when sites are not operational, or unsafe to collect a sample;
  • Determination of water storage capacities, flow direction and water storage capacities through drone deployment.     

The judges were impressed with how the multi-faceted system provides a comprehensive understanding of water management across sites, allows for more accurate reporting, as well as an improved system of water quality collection sampling.

BORAL CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS AND CEMENT – ORMEAU QUARRY
INNOVATIVE STORMWATER MANAGEMENT SYSTEM  
For design and introduction of a stormwater management system to capture, contain and clarify stormwater runoff at Ormeau Quarry.  This innovative and cost-effective system includes:  

  • Use of coarse sediment forebays, geosynthetic clay liner membranes, and beneficial use of recycled waste projects including 1500 tyres and 1200 concrete mass-block facing units; 
  • Use of temporary retention structure and application of surface stabilisation projects; and
  • Staging and sequencing of works while maintaining safe day-to- day quarrying operations.   



ENVIRONMENTAL INNOVATION AWARD – HIGHLY COMMENDED  

HOLCIM (AUSTRALIA) PTY LTD – QLD AGGREGATE SITES
IMPLEMENTATION OF BIODIVERSITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM  
For introduction of a Global Biodiversity Management System including Statewide Rapid Biodiversity Assessments.  This comprehensive program, in conjunction with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) enables rapid biodiversity assessments to be undertaken by a specialist at quarry sites across Queensland.  In addition, the biodiversity importance of sites were classified, and Biodiversity Actions Plans developed.   

COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP AWARD – HIGHLY COMMENDED

BORAL CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS AND CEMENT
COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP FOR IMPROVED TRAFFIC SAFETY  
Partnership with Cairns Regional Council in a community infrastructure project to improve cycle safety through construction of a concrete cycle way benefitting recreational riders and the 4000 students who attend local schools. 



COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP AWARD – HIGHLY COMMENDED

HOLCIM (AUSTRALIA) PTY LTD – BEENLEIGH QUARRY – STRENGTHENED COMMUNITY RELATIONS IN LOCAL AREA  
Re-established engagement with the local community through a Community Engagement Plan including development of a community web page, SMS blast notification system, MoU with local Indigenous group, and support of local community events.        




HEALTH AND SAFETY INNOVATION - WINNER

HANSON AUSTRALIA PTY LTD – NERANG QUARRY
DESIGN OF CRUSHER WEDGE TOOL GUIDE  
For design and implementation of a crusher wedge tool guide to ensure the wedges used to dismantle a crusher for maintenance are restrained and no longer causing a “missile” hazard.  

Quarry crushers require maintenance which includes dismantling them to change out their inner manganese.  Part of the crusher design is to have dedicated location for workers to drive wedges in to assist in separating the two halves.  As they are under a high amount of pressure, such wedges can become a “missile” with the potential to fatally injure a worker.  

This innovative and cost-effective solution was devised by workers onsite, and helps the wedge to be located in position.  No injuries or instances of a wedge dislodging have occurred since developing and using this unique tool.  The concept also has the potential to be used widely in the industry across many types of quarry crushers.  




HEALTH AND SAFETY INNOVATION – HIGHLY COMMENDED

BORAL CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS AND CEMENT – LOGISTICS WACOL – DESIGN OF AGITATOR TRUCK WITH IMPROVED ROLL STABILITY  
In conjunction with MACK and CESCO, a new agitator truck has been designed with improved roll stability performance to provide drivers with a greater safety margin on the road.  Boral has designed, built and tested an agitator with improved specifications including 9.5mm thick chassis rails, use of MACK’s Inverted Leaf (MIL) steel spring suspension, and lowering the centre of gravity.  Computer modelling, real life roll-stability testing, and driver feedback were also considered as part of this comprehensive solution.      




HEALTH AND SAFETY INNOVATION – HIGHLY COMMENDED

BORAL CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS AND CEMENT – LOGISTICS WACOL – CEMENT TANKER – PRODUCT PIPE RESTRAINT SYSTEM  
For design and implementation of a restraint wrap system (an alternative to the traditional wire braid whip check) to restrain pressurised cement tanker product hoses in the event of coupling failure or inadvertent release.  This cost-effective solution comprises of a 750mm diameter loop of load restraint, carabineer and attachment lug which is easily applied, and removes hazards identified in the traditional check.
