WA EH&S Awards 2016 - Winners Announced

The WA Environment, Health & Safety Awards 2016 were awarded at the Construction Materials Industry Dinner on Friday, 5th August 2016 at the Crown Perth, Burswood.

There were 24 entries submitted over three award categories, which focus on improving environmental performance, health and safety outcomes, and community leadership.

HEALTH & SAFETY INNOVATION - WINNER

HOLCIM (AUSTRALIA) PTY LTD
Bunbury Concrete
Traffic Management Separating Vehicles and Pedestrians

The judging panel commented “a good nomination where there is clear alignment between the site risk assessment and the adoption of risk mitigation. Altering site layout can be daunting for site managers, however the company has taken the approach to seriously tackle this risk - with a long term and sustainable solution adopted.”

"Most sites you usually have to walk past heavy traffic on a marked path to get to the site office. This solution has addressed this issue by separating the two components. A significant improvement including risk reduction to pedestrians and vehicles”

HEALTH & SAFETY INNOVATION - HIGHLY COMMENDED

HOLCIM (AUSTRALIA) PTY LTD
Gosnells Quarry
Crusher Access Platform

“This retrofit to an existing operation is a leading example of how simple solutions can prevent injury in the workplace. The use of a segmented removable design allows for both daily use of the walkways for inspection of plant, whilst also allowing for maintenance to occur unimpeded once the walkways are removed" said the Judging Panel.

"The initiative now avoids the risks of falls from the edges of the crusher onto the floor, which had previously occurred at the site. The engineered solution is site specific, but may well be an example for other sites, that retro-fixed elevated work platforms can be installed effectively on these crusher configurations.”

HEALTH & SAFETY INNOVATION - HIGHLY COMMENDED

COCKBURN CEMENT
Munster
Improving loading systems to comply with Main Roads AMMS Scheme

"A significant investment for significant benefit. This is a very sound nomination. The company has found a solution to achieve safe loading of vehicles, while maximising loading amounts, and minimising infrastructure changes at their site.” Judging Panel

ENVIRONMENTAL INNOVATION - WINNER

ENVIRONMENTAL INNOVATION - HIGHLY COMMENDED

HOLCIM (AUSTRALIA) PTY LTD
Gosnells Quarry
On site Water Management

"Overall, the company has sought to develop a whole-of-site solution for surface water management. These matters are usually extremely difficult to effect, and in this case the company has been able to achieve good environmental outcomes with the approval of the government regulators. Significant overall environmental benefit” Judging Panel

COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP - WINNER

BORAL CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS & CEMENT
Orange Grove Quarry
Local School & Community Engagement

“A well structured and genuine engagement program that is clearly imbedded into the site operation - with obvious support from company management. Significant investment in the local community. A true partnership with the community. A quality entry.” Judging Panel
