SA Construction Materials Industry Dinner 2016

On 29 July 2016, South Australian members of CCAA came together to celebrate the Environment Health and Safety Awards (EHS) at the Construction Materials Industry Dinner (CMID).  Held at the prestigious Adelaide Oval, over 160 attendees heard from Mr Chris Picton MP, the Assistant Minister to the Treasurer, who spoke about the importance of the role the heavy construction materials industry plays in delivering the infrastructure priorities of the South Australian Government.

Environmental Innovation
The Environmental Innovation award was presented to Hallett Concrete for recycling slag, as a replacement fine aggregate source, in a concrete mix specifically designed for the Nyrstar Transformation project.  The slag was a by-product of the Nyrstar processes and through proactive action by Hallett was able to be re-used in the concrete mix for the project.  This decision, reduced the need to use natural sand, found a use for a by-product and led to valuable transportation savings.  Hallett concrete has successfully used over 1000 tonnes of slag so far in delivering the project and is now looking at extending this use to other projects.    




Health & Safety Innovation
The highly commended award for Health & Safety Innovation went to Holcim Australia for their Active Choice Behaviour Based Safety Program.  Active Choice has been designed in-house, prepared and above all else, tailored to suit the Holcim Australia businesses. Designing the program in-house has ensured it has tremendous ownership throughout the business and is actively supported.  The cost impact to the business was minimal, considering the off-the-shelf alternatives.  This world-class initiative is having a positive impact on Holcim’s safety & health performance.



The winner of the Health and Safety Innovation Award for 2016 went to Southern Quarries and Direct Mix Group, for a series of Safety Leadership workshops which was implemented in order to facilitate the cultural change required to further improve health and safety across the business.  An interactive workshop style session was developed in-house in conjunction with Phil Smallman, an external presenter who was himself injured at work, and is incredibly lucky to be alive.  The workshops were considered best practice and was delivered to employees and contractors and is being credited with the profound safety improvements.




Community Leadership 
For the very first time in SA, CCAA presented an award for Community Leadership, which in 2016 went to Adelaide Brighton Cement for their community engagement and development of a community park, adjacent to the Birkenhead kiln.  Key features of the park include: irrigated grass recreation lawns, a paved entry plaza, two new shelters, seating and a drinking fountain with dog bowl. Over 2000 new native trees and plants have been planted, rubber moulds to create passive/calming dog areas, logs and limestone boulders providing a natural edge to the park and includes a series of new bins and a dog bag dispenser units.  There is also an engineered water detention basin, which is ensuring flood relief for local residents.
