2019 Tasmanian Safety Seminar

CCAA Tasmania was proud to convene on Wednesday 23 October at the Hanson Australia Flagstaff Gully Quarry. The theme for this seminar was Transport Logistics and Safety in Quarries and On-Site. Over 40 representatives from member companies joined representatives of key Government agencies and industry client companies.

  • The Tasmanian Attorney General, The Hon. Elise Archer MP opened the seminar by reminding attendees that government and industry contribute to improvements in safety; and congratulating CCAA on solid work on preparing best practice training and guidelines including the associations Agitator Rollover Prevention Course, the Concrete Pump Delivery Guideline, the Workplace Health & Safety Guideline - Management of RCS in Quarries, and the Guideline for Pedestrian Traffic Management. 
  • Kirsty McCulloch of Kirsty McCulloch Consulting delivered a thought-provoking message about fatigue and the effects on performance and safety. The presentation was a wake-up-call to many in the audience, to reflect on whether they and their employees are arriving to work each day fully rested.
  • The presentation session was rounded off with a timely reminder from Robin Murcutt of Hanson Australia about the Chain of Responsibility and how it is now applied across the industry. The Hanson Chain of Responsibility Compliance Handbook can be viewed here. Robin also explored tipper safety and the application of exclusion zones; thorough site assessment; communication; and new technologies. Tipper safety is a significant area of corner for the industry and CCAA has responded in the first instance with the production of the Guideline of End Tipper Unloading Exclusion Zones. 
  • After lunch, the group was invited to tour both the Hanson Australia downhill power generating conveyor and Downer's new asphalt plant - a rare opportunity to take a closer look at these state-of-the-art facilitated while they were shutdown.
