TAS Health & Safety Seminar - A Success
The annual CCAA Tasmanian Safety Seminar was held on Friday 19 October 2018 at Hazell Bros. Group offices in Derwent Park. This year the Safety Seminar ran in conjunction with the State Government's October Safety Month, and Mr Andrew Tunstall of WorkSafe Tasmania was a contributor on the day. 35 industry employees and affiliates attended the seminar representing quarry operators and support industries from around Tasmania.
CCAA and its members prioritise health and safety in the workplace. CCAA represents the quarrying industry on the
Mine Safety Steering Committee and is regularly engaged with
WorkSafe Tasmania and the Minister, the Hon. Guy Barnett MP over issues relating to health and safety.
Below is a small summary on the topics discussed by each presenter:
- Mr Gary Chapman, Boral Australia | CCAA Chairman reminded attendees of the various ways CCAA contributes to health and safety awareness across the cement, concrete and aggregates industries. At the safety seminar Mr Chapman announced the new industry guideline for Workplace Health & Safety Guideline - Management of Respirable Crystalline Silica in Quarries. This guideline was prepared with cooperation of CCAA member companies and WorkSafe authorities around the nation.
- The Hon. Guy Barnett MP congratulated the industry, represented by CCAA and WorkSafe Tasmania for achievements in work health and safety realised by working cooperatively.
- Andrew Tunstall, WorkSafe Tasmania discussed how a compliant safety management should work when applied to a low-risk quarry operation.
- Grant Atherton, JMG Consulting Engineers was the keynote speaker for this seminar. Mr Atherton delivered a workshop focussed on identifying threats to safety resulting from the interaction of pedestrians and vehicles at quarry sites.
- The afternoon session was a bus trip and site visit to Hazell Bros. Leslie Valley Quarry. Here examples of typical methods for separating pedestrians, vehicles and machinery were pointed out and evaluated.
The combination of an interactive workshop followed by a site tour where the particular issues and controls could be observed in practice was particularly powerful. All attendees were given a hand out with the top ten key issues and controls all quarry operators should look out for.
