Fatigue Management: Concrete Agitator Drivers

Driver fatigue is a recognised safety hazard for the road transport industry.

For concrete agitator truck drivers, fatigue management is regulated and governed by different laws in different states.

For those states covered by the National Heavy Vehicle Law (QLD, NSW, ACT, VIC, TAS and SA) an exemption notice for concrete agitator drivers is in effect for 3 years from 1 January 2019 to allow Short Work Breaks to be taken in the agitator under certain conditions.

The exemption allows a driver of a concrete agitator to take a Short Work Break (which is counted towards their rest) when the vehicle is stationary, the engine is running and the driver is doing no work.

CCAA has prepare a Short Video (based on the content within the NHVR Gazette notice) to assist the industry how Short Work Breaks can be used to manage fatigue and improve safety for all concrete agitator drivers in regions covered by the NHV Law.
